Angel | Tennessee Center for Decision-Making Support

Angel

Angel is 19, is Deaf, and has autism. His family shares their story of how they support Angel in making decisions.

He is a very creative and artistic person! As he matured, our family talked and thought about decision-making options that would be best for him once he turned eighteen. Looking at all the options and talking with the teams that support our son was critical in helping us as a family make the best decision with him. When we talked about decisions with Angel, he told us he wanted our help with making decisions throughout his life and to make some decisions for him when needed.

He does not feel comfortable making some important life decisions without our input. We are committed to always discussing decisions that impact Angel with him first. Sometimes people think that doesn’t happen in conservatorship, but the person with a disability should ALWAYS be included in the discussion. Looking at all the options, conservatorship was the right fit for him.
